Thompson Cottage, White Bear Lake

This is so starkly simple it's hard to believe it is their tree, yet the paper chains and paper cones have appeared in prior years. The family seems to have moved again.

The candles are lit, but gifts are not much in evidence here. Six ribbon-tied boxes, some black walnuts (no oranges!) and Christmas cards are all we see of the family's customary holiday abundance.

This is the last Christmas tree photo that Edward took.

In a few months, the country would go to war, and Eddie, now l6, would enlist in the U. S. Navy.
